Hollow Knight is one of the best indie games to have come out in the last 10 years.

Team Cherry, who developed and published the game, did an incredible job of mixing a great story with great gameplay. Hollow Knight is a challenging, yet rewarding game.

However, if you’re anything like me, the game can sometimes be too challenging.

That’s a nice way of saying that I suck at this game (and most games in general).

Luckily, Hollow Knight offers charms. These charms grant different abilities that change how the game is played. So, without further ado, here are the 5 best Hollow Knight charms if you’re struggling with the game.

Best Hollow Knight Charms

  1. Soul Catcher

  2. Thorns of Agony

  3. Spell Twister

  4. Grubsong

  5. Quick Focus

1. Soul Catcher

If players are having trouble even hitting their enemies, this charm isn’t right for them.

Soul Catcher’s entire purpose is to increase the amount of soul the player receives when damaging an enemy. Soul can be used to heal and to cast powerful spells. However, there’s a caveat with this charm.

Soul Catcher only increases the amount of soul when the player uses their nail.

Hitting enemies with spells or other ways won’t give them more soul. On top of that, the charm costs 2 notches to equip. Although all of this can be a deal-breaker for some, the charm is still useful in a lot of cases. Especially, if players like to use the hit-and-run strategy.

2. Thorns of Agony

For players that continuously get hit, Thorns of Agony is an absolute must.

This charm costs 1 notch, and it damages enemies when the player receives damage. However, like Soul Catcher, there’s a tiny asterisk next to that definition: enemies have to be pretty close to the player to receive damage.

If an enemy from afar throws a projectile that damages the player, the charm won’t be useful. As a counterpoint, it’s most likely that enemies will be nearby when they damage the player.

So, the charm more likely than not will be useful in most cases. Its usefulness topped with its low notch cost makes the Thorns of Agony one of the best Hollow Knight charms.

3. Spell Twister

Soul is one of, if not the most, useful feature that the player has. That’s why it’s important to have a lot of it, especially when going up against bosses. To that point, Spell Twister is the charm to use when players want to be conservative with their soul. This charm, which uses up to 2 notches, decreases the amount of soul used when the player uses spells.

Although the nail does plenty of damage, spells are also a great way of damaging enemies. Whether it’s ground-pounding or throwing projectiles, spells are useful.

That’s why having a charm that allows the player to perform more spells while decreasing its cost is a plus. An important note about this charm is that it does not decrease the amount of soul used to heal.

4. Grubsong

Similar to Thorns of Agony, Grubsong is a great charm to use for players who routinely get hit. Another similarity to Thorns of Agony is its notch cost, Grubsong only requires 1 notch as well.

However its ability is vastly different, this charm will give the player soul whenever they take damage.

We’ve already gone over how important soul is. So, to receive some when the player takes damage is an incredible deal.

If players are constantly taking damage already, then they might as well get something out of it. It doesn’t matter how the player receives damage, whether it’s from nearby enemies or projectiles, Grubsong will give you soul either way.

5. Quick Focus

Quick Focus isn’t just one of the best Hollow Knight charms for struggling players, it’s one of the best in the entire game.

An important aspect for players is the ability to heal while in a fight.

Sometimes that’s hard to do because healing can be a little slow, especially when there are projectiles and enemies all over the place.

That’s where Quick Focus comes into play; it allows the player to heal quickly. A lot of Hollow Knight boss fights don’t give the player a lot of time to relax and compose themselves, that’s why Quick Focus is so important.

Although it costs 3 notches, it’s completely worth it. All of the charms on this list are fantastic, but Quick Focus is the one charm that should almost always be equipped.

Hollow Knight has tons of charms to use and experiment with. Some give extra health, protection, or damage. However, for players that find the game a tad bit too challenging, these are the best Hollow Knight charms to use.
