Interested in working at a local tech startup? Join #YesWeCode at the Berkeley Startup Job Fair hosted by Localwise in partnership with the City of Berkeley’s Office of Economic Development (OED) on Jan. 28 at NextSpace in Berkeley.
This job fair serves to take one of many necessary steps to address diversity challenges in the startup sector and create an inclusive foundation as Berkeley grows to be an important tech hub.
In the past five years, Berkeley has witnessed remarkable growth in the startup sector. In 2011, OED counted 100 startups in Berkeley and today startups in Berkeley number 300. Job creation has accompanied this growth as, since 2014, there has been a 23 percent increase in jobs available at Berkeley startups.
The efforts Localwise has contributed to promoting diversity and inclusion in the startup sector is part of a broader effort to increase diversity in the tech industry overall.Empirical data demonstrates that in the overall tech workforce, only 3 percent of tech employees are Latino and c-suite leadership is only 2 percent black.
When comparing diversity figures among employees, executive leadership, and board of directors, the results reinforce the fact that the tech industry is overwhelmingly white and male dominated. View the latest diversity reports data here.
The event will include key community stakeholders such as the Kapor Center for Social Impact, Women Who Code, Hack the Hood, and Telegraph Academy.
