People are open to feeling connected to Robots to answer questions

Researches among military veterans to evaluate their psychiatric health and to identify symptoms of depressions and post-traumatic stress, PDHA (Post-Deployment Health Assessment), have identified that classical methods of interviewing by human or by anonymous questionnaires are distorting, closed or without good rapport. What is necessary is something that carries secrets confidentially and without judgment. The findings, which appear in an issue of the journal Frontiers in Robotics and AI, suggest that virtual interviewers could prove to be even better than human therapists at helping soldiers open up about their mental health. “Most people would assume these things are in conflict with each other — that you can’t have anonymity and rapport at the same time,” says Gale Lucas, a psychologist at USC’s Institute for Creative Technologies.

As described in this Wired article, a virtual interviewer, an artificially intelligent avatar rendered in 3D, can offer both.

A robot will never judge you

An article with the title: “Why We Will Share Our Most Intimate Thoughts With Robots” by the Chatbots Magazine is describing the future in which we are not only starting to talk with the computer but rather the computers are starting to talk back.

There are certain types of conversations people would rather have with a robot than with another person as robots will never judge you.

The robot doesn’t care if you are inexperienced, unhealthy, or financially illiterate. You can speak with a robot in detail and with complete openness without any fear of embarrassment. This fact will make some game-changing new products and services possible, for which robots are uniquely positioned.

People are more honest with robots

“People are more open with automated tools because they believe computers don’t judge and that they’re more ethical,” as reported in a BBC article. Studies showed that a large group of people see robots rather more unbiased, trustworthy and ethical as some human counterparts.

Another aspect, which gives responsibility to the good intention of the robot makers, is that people believe the machines. “People think the system knows better than they do,” Alan Wagner, a social robots researcher at Georgia Tech Research Institute in Atlanta said.

One reason is that robots are marketed as all-knowing systems, and usually previous interactions with automated systems have also worked properly, so we assume that every system will do the right thing.

Robots are simple to interact

Several experiments and case studies showed that children with autism loved to interact with robots and partly have built a great bond with them. “Our robot looks a lot like a human but doesn’t have all the features that a person does. This can help autistic individuals as the robot is simpler. They can focus on one social aspect of communication at a time,” said Mohammad Mahoor, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, in an interview.

This simplification is also bringing back the aspect of the judgmental feeling of a human by the wide complexity and variants of for example facial expressions.

Robots are proactive and reliable

Rocky Robots is combining the strengths of a virtual assistant and a robot and bring this together in a life-coach application which is available at all times.

In the following, an introduction video of the Rocky Robots Deskbot can be seen.

Rocky Robots Deskbot Demonstration — The Life Coach at All Times

The Deskbot is a personal robot that enhances the user’s daily self-improvement routines. Very important are the habit building, goal setting, and achievement tracking applications which come along with the robot and the A.I. based user dialogues.

The life-coach robot will talk with you pro-actively and help you to achieve your goals with persistence.
