The Guardians of the Galaxy have jumped into superstardom ever since the release of their 2014 Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. Now, everyone knows who Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot are, and they’ve fallen in love with this rag-tag group of misfits.
So, it’s not a surprise that a video game starring the Guardians of the Galaxy is on its way. Here’s what you need to know about the Guardians of the Galaxy game being developed by Eidos-Montreal and being published by Square Enix.
Guardians of the Galaxy Game: Story Details
According to the game’s official website, the Guardians haven’t been a team for a long time, they’ve recently just begun. This is similar to the film, where they come together and form a team quickly after they meet each other.
The website states that the team’s decisions snowball out of control, and it turns into a “chain of catastrophic events”. With the game taking place in outer space, there’s no limit to what this could mean. Maybe it could mean planets being destroyed or mean an encounter with the genocidal maniac, Thanos.
Peter Quill, Star-Lord
Although this game will feature all the members of the team, you will only be able to play as the leader, Star-Lord. Taken from Earth at a young age, Star-Lord still has ties to the planet with the music he listens to and the references he makes. As the leader of the Guardians, Star-Lord tries to reel in his teammates, but can also go along with their ridiculous ideas.
Equipped with his rocket boots and his elemental weapons, Star-Lord might not have superpowers, but he doesn’t need to. His mask also allows him to breathe in space, just in case he ever needs to leave his ship.
Guardians of the Galaxy Gameplay
Even though you only play as Star-Lord, the rest of the Guardians are still available to assist you. In an in-depth video of the Guardians of the Galaxy game, we get a closer look at the gameplay. The player can call on his teammates for assistance, but it looks like you can’t spam that consistently.
It seems that there is a cooldown so your fellow guardians can’t help you out all the time. It also appears that the guardians have numerous attacks to assist you, and you can cycle to the one that would help you the most.
Throughout the gameplay video, we can also hear the Guardians conversing with each other, teasing and joking with themselves as we’ve grown accustomed to them doing. But it won’t be all fun and games for Star-Lord and his merry band of misfits. He’ll have to make decisions for the group that might not be popular amongst some of the members, and that might put the other Guardians in peril.
In the video, we get a peek at one of these decisions. Star-Lord has to decide who to hear out when the rest of the Guardians are talking over each other, and again when he has to choose which member to sell.
Although these seem like minor decisions that wouldn’t have changed the story too much, we wonder if we’ll have to make choices that have much more consequences and effects later on in the game.
Guardians of the Galaxy in Video Games
This isn’t the first time the Guardians have starred in their own video game. Released in 2017, Guardians of the Galaxy: Telltale Series is a narrative game where your decisions will affect the story.
Like the new Guardians of the Galaxy game, the Telltale series takes influence from the MCU and puts their new spin on it. The Guardians have also appeared as playable characters in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order.
Square Enix and Marvel
The publishing company Square Enix isn’t a stranger to Marvel and its characters. Recently, they released the Marvel’s Avengers game which saw the hero team reunite after a tragedy.
The game is still being supported today, with Clint Barton and Kate Bishop being added after the game’s launch. Soon, a Black Panther expansion is arriving in the game with the character becoming playable and Wakanda being added as an area.
Guardians of the Galaxy Release Date
Fans of Guardians of the Galaxy will be happy to hear that the game will release sooner rather than later. According to the official website, the release date is set for October 26, 2021, and pre-orders are available. The pre-orders will include different costumes for the game, depending on which version of the game you pre-order.
The Guardians of the Galaxy game is shaping up to be an exciting game featuring Marvel characters. With many more characters and storylines they can pull from, we’re interested in what else they’ll reveal about the game in the upcoming months.
