I almost never drive. I walk two miles to work along a bus line and hop on the bus when it’s too cold or I’m running late.
Occasionally a neighbor driver will pull over and offer a ride or a neighbor cyclist will pull over and walk along and chat with me. The company is nice and occasionally I accept a ride.
This morning I had to drive in to the office. I have a meeting in Hartford and CT’s regional transportation to the North is nearly non existent. (That’s changing for the better soon.) On the way in a woman was desperately hitchhiking. I could tell she had just missed her bus. I gave her a ride down the bus line and let her out where I had to turn. It felt good and I enjoyed the company. I’ve had the thought a few times while passing bus stops that I should offer to give folks a ride downtown. I haven’t because i feel like I would be perceived as creepy.
It’s occurred to me on many morning commutes that their should be an app for modern hitchhiking that leverages crowd accountability. Does this exist? Do you use it? Should I use it?
